Proper compacted base
We excavate and build a compacted crushed-stone base so the steps sit level and stay level through Toronto's clay-soil movement.
Front Steps · Toronto & the GTA
We rebuild worn and settling front steps in natural stone and precast — levelled, safe underfoot, and engineered for GTA freeze-thaw. No surface patches that fail by spring.
What's involved
We excavate and build a compacted crushed-stone base so the steps sit level and stay level through Toronto's clay-soil movement.
Units specified by absorption class and PSI rating — chosen to resist spalling and cracking through Canadian winters, not just to look good on day one.
We correct the grade so water sheds away from the steps and foundation — the single biggest factor in how long the rebuild lasts.
Custom railing fabrication, lighting, and landing details resolved together so the finished steps look intentional, not repaired.
Recent work · East York

1940s brick home in East York — fractured concrete steps rebuilt in limestone with a granite walkway, new railings, and corrected drainage.
Why steps fail in the GTA
Water enters a hairline crack, freezes, and expands with enough force to split the concrete. Patching the surface never closes the water pathway, so it keeps cracking from underneath.
Toronto clay shifts with moisture and frost. Steps set without a proper crushed-stone base settle and lift unevenly — a trip hazard that only gets worse each winter.
If water pools at the base of the steps, it's heading toward your foundation. Proper grading sheds it away — cosmetic on the surface, structural underneath.
High-absorption stone spalls within a few winters. We spec materials rated for freeze-thaw so the rebuild still looks right in year thirty.

Questions
Sometimes — but most cracking starts with water and freeze-thaw movement beneath the steps, so a surface patch usually re-cracks within a season or two. During the assessment we tell you honestly whether a repair will hold or whether a rebuild on a proper base is the better long-term value.
Most standalone front-step rebuilds take 3 to 5 working days on site, depending on size, access, and whether drainage or grading also needs correcting. We give you a firm timeline after the design assessment.
Natural stone and precast concrete units rated for Canadian freeze-thaw. We specify by absorption class and PSI rating, not just appearance, so the steps resist spalling through GTA winters.
Water enters a hairline crack, freezes, and expands with enough force to fracture the concrete. Combined with a weak or missing compacted base under Toronto's clay soil, steps settle and lift unevenly. A proper rebuild addresses both the base and the water pathway.
We rebuild front steps across Toronto and the GTA — including North York, Etobicoke, Scarborough, East York, Leaside, and into Mississauga, Vaughan, and Markham. Send a photo of your steps for a free assessment.
